Not enough colostrum

This is rare, but it can happen. Commonly, cows can run out their colostrum before calving, need to be milked before caalving if their udder is too large or oedematous. Often there is too much of it and its too weak- see the next category for a colostrometer.

(Journal of Nutrition. 2001;131:1256-1263.) Colostrum intake differentially affected intestinal epithelial surface and proliferation and enzyme activities. Feeding high amounts of first colostrum seemed to enhance the survival of mature mucosal epithelial cells in selected parts of the small intestine, whereas the lack of colostrum seemed to decrease epithelial growth.
