Weak colostrum?
If a holstein cow gives more than 8 litres at its first milking , or it has run its colostrum , or it needed to be milked before calving, then its colostrum is likely too weak. It can be checked with the colostrometer and/or fortified with "First Thirst". CCT was the best product, but is now unavailable. Avoid products promising the earth from a small packet!!
(Journal of Nutrition. 2001;131:1256-1263.) Colostrum intake differentially affected intestinal epithelial surface and proliferation and enzyme activities. Feeding high amounts of first colostrum seemed to enhance the survival of mature mucosal epithelial cells in selected parts of the small intestine, whereas the lack of colostrum seemed to decrease epithelial growth.
