Mastikit is a new, convenient laboratory service for identifying bacterial pathogens in milk. The samples are processed atfarmlab.co.uk using PCR technology, a state-of-the-art molecular diagnostic system.

PCR is a technique to amplify a single or a few copies of a piece of DNA, generating millions of copies of a particular DNA sequence. This sensitive detection method enables mastitis-causing bacteria to be accurately and rapidly identified.

How can Mastikit help me manage milk quality on my dairy?

Mastikit submission is a real advance in mastitis detection and helps producers identify problems more accurately and more quickly. This can also lead to more effective treatments for both clinical and subclinical mastitis.

• The use of PCR allows more targeted use of antibiotics, by more rapidly and reliably identifying pathogens that may not be identified using traditional culture.
• Decreasing the test time, compared with conventional culturing. PCR does not rely on the ability of bacteria to grow in the lab.
• Fewer no growths and improved coliform detection, compared with traditional culture methods.
• Detecting sub-clinical and high cell count cases of mastitis before they become clinical or chronic.
• Can be used to detect mastitis pathogens in cows currently on antibiotic treatment.
