Usage Rates, Instructions for Use

“Keeping it simple” dose rates:-

Start of housing period- 6 kg per 100cows

Re-seed after a big slurrying session.

Between Silage Cuts- 2 kg per 100cows if 8 week gap between emptying

                                      3 kg per 100cows if 6 week gap between emptying

Application

For above ground stores it is usually best to add “N-fix” to the reception pit.

For lagoons, spread as evenly as possible and agitate if convenient.

For stores under slatted floors, which are difficult to mix, add to lots of water (e.g. in a slurry tanker with some water and a decent amount of slurry) and pour through the slats.

BEWARE OF SLURRY GAS WHEN EVER AROUND SLURRY, ESPECIALLY IF MIXING SLATTED OR INDOOR SYSTEMS. POTENTIALLY FATAL!

Timing

The store should be re-seeded with “N-fix” each time slurry is removed from the store.

Formalin Foot Baths Inhibit Bacteria

Probably, bugs will not work if footbathing with formalin twice daily.

TK Everyday Footbath- being tested at the moment.

In Feed Antibiotics

Pigs that are fed infeed antibiotics can inhibit growth of bacteria, antibiotics should be avoided.

Stirring

The lagoon or store should be stirred every two weeks to agitate the bacteria which may sink over time in a still environment. Basically a quick mix is needed.

Required Dose- The Scientific Approach

The dose of “N-fix” is dependent on both quantity of slurry to be treated and estimated storage time. The shorter the storage period of the slurry the greater the dose of “N-fix” that is required.

The table below shows the number of kg of “N-fix” required for a given volume of store and storage period.

Volume of Slurry Stores

It is most convenient to work out volume in meters cubed(m3).

The volume of a rectangular store is;

Width(m) x Height(m) x Depth(m) = volume(m3)

So if the store is 15m x 20m x 2m = 600m3

The volume of a cylindrical store is;

pi r2 x h

So if the store is 15m in diameter and 5m high the volume is ;

3.14 x (15/2)2 x 5 = 883m3

Units

The conversion from m3 to gallons is;

1 m3 = 220gals

The conversion from ft3 to m3 is;

1m3 = 35.3ft3

The conversion from ft3 to gallons is;

1ft3 = 6.23 gals
