It's a different idea to Formalin, which is-
- Carcinogenic
- Just a chemical, no one stands behind it, its not sold to do a that job. No advice
- Hazardous to ship
- Difficult to legally dispose of?
- If used too much it hardens the hoof to the point of cracking
Our NICE 'n' DRY -
- Dry Powdered footbath
- Keeps exit areas dry
- Reduces cross-contamination of animals with contagious bacteria
- Animals go over it easily
- Ingredients are safe to use as fertilisers by spreading over your muck heap and spreading as FYM
- Can be a bit dusty, so wear a dust mask as appropriate
- Stays surprisingly uncontaminated depending on the conditions, so can be left in the bath and topped up as needed.
Usage rates- start with 40 kg for 100 head of sheep & lambs = 2 bags
Start with approx 5 to 6cm deep for sheep or 10 cm deep for cattle.
One 20 kg is approx 20 litres, which is the correct level in one of our "Dovetail foot baths"
Quantity Usage Example-
First fill the footbath to the starting depth of 5 to 6cm for sheep, this depends on the shape and size of the footbath. One liter of volume, use 1kg of powder. , so start with 40kg.
For larger numbers of sheep, 100 ewes plus their lambs will remove about 15 kg of powder from the bath. so top up as you need to
200 ewes - buy 3 bags, plus lambs - buy 4 bags
300 ewes- buy 4 bags, plus lambs- buy 5 bags
400 ewes - buy 4 bags, plus lambs- buy 5 bags
500 ewes & their lambs at foot at about 8 weeks old , buy 6 bags.
800 ewes & lambs, buy 8 bags
800 weaned ewes, start with 40kg and about 100kg will be used. so buy 6bags
You will be left with a decent quantity to cover and re-use if it isnt too contaminated. But, as I say they don't have the fear of a wet footbath and so hardly soil it at all.
If feet are wet to start with, the usage rates will be higher.
